MARINE PARKS

MALACCA: The beauty and uniqueness of the coral reefs in the Malacca Marine Park which includes three islands namely Pulau Undan, Pulau Nangka and Pulau Dodol will be highlighted as one of the new attractions in conjunction with Visit Malacca Year 2024 (TMM2024).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the state government together with the Fisheries Department and the Tourism Promotion Division (BPP) are taking the necessary steps including upgrading facilities to welcome tourists to the marine park.

“These islands, which were gazetted as a marine park last April, are among the most beautiful areas on the west coast with its colourful coral reefs and suitable for water activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving.

“The state government will also organise various leisure and water sports activities such as the Asean Cup Regatta and many more which will be listed in the TMM2024 calendar,“ he told reporters at the Seri Negeri Complex here today.

MELAKA TAXIS LAUNCHED

Water taxi service debuts along Melaka River
Melaka Water Taxis MELAKA: Melaka Chief Minister has launched the water taxi service along the Sungai Melaka waterway after a 10-year wait. https://melakarivercruise.my/loncat.php d

Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Jusoh officially commenced the urban water taxi service on Tuesday (May 16) night soon after launching the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation’s (PPSPM) new headquarters at Dataran Pengakalan Rama here.

In his speech, Ab Rauf said PPSM has grown by leaps and bounds since it was established in 2005. He said in the beginning, the River Cruise service only recorded 3,290 passengers. "However, a whopping 13 million people have used the River Cruise service between 2006 and May 8 this year. "This is an outstanding achievement within a time frame of 18 years," he said. Ab Rauf said PPSPM started with two boats as its River Cruise Service and now has a fleet of 40 boats. "PPSPM now has a water taxi service," he said.

The initial plan to introduce the water taxi service was made by the then Melaka chief minister Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam, back in 2011. Dr Mohd Ali is currently the Yang-di Pertua of Melaka.

However, the RM130mil rehabilitation and beautification of Sungai Melaka hit a snag after the earlier contractor appointed by then Natural Resources and Environment Ministry failed to complete the project as scheduled in 2017. The project involves the widening and extension work of the river by another 2.3km to enable the water taxis to stop and pick up passengers from five new jetties along the second phase from Dataran Pengkalan Rama to Batu Hampar in Batu Berendam.

Meanwhile, PPSPM chief executive officer, Datuk Murad Husin said there will be dozens of jetties for the water taxis to serve the passengers along the waterway from Dataran Pengkalan Rama.

He said the fare from one jetty to another will cost RM1 and the total for the full route will be RM8.

Murad said PPSPM also plans to extend the water taxi service up to Batu Hampar under the second phase of the River Cruise route. "However, we are facing the issue of sediment which impedes the boat movements. "We are working closely with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to resolve this," he said. Murad said the water taxi service can currently reach up to Rumpun Bahagia jetty under the second phase and the plan is to extend up to the Melaka Sentral bus terminal

TIME TO REVITALISE MELAKA NEW CHINATOWN

HOW TO REVITALISE KAMPUNG JAWA (MELAKA NEWCHINATOWN) AREA

Since the demolition of the Central Market in 1988, the Kampung Jawa area commercial activities have been on a decline.

Some efforts were made over the past years. Night markets were held over before the Chinese New Year period. Once there was a Disco stage at Jalan Kee Ann for revellers to enjoy themselves. In 2019, Kee Ann Food Street was opened. It lasted about 1 year before closing down in 2020 due to Covid 19 pandemic. It is still not revived in 2023.

It is about time to revitalise Kampung Jawa ( Melaka New Chinatown ) as another place visitors and locals to enjoy.

Vedromall by the River as a modern 4 storey air-conditioned shopping complex can be marketed as the main magnet to draw crowds here. An anchor tenant like NSK Pasar Segar, Village Grocer, Mr. DIY or ACE Hardware should be approached by /Vedromall management. Owners who have invested in lots at Vedromall should also assist by offering low rental rates to entice anchor tenant(s). Create a win-win environment to bring in tenants and visitors to Vedromall.

For Jalan Kee Ann, the Kee Ann food street concept though focussed on open air street dining, it can be rebranded to Kee Ann Walk. Instead of focussing on food and open dining, more stalls selling fruits, souvenirs, handicrafts and other wares can  be incorporated. Visitors can dine in open air or just browse around the walk for souvenirs or handicrafts.

Furthermore, if they are tired of walking in the open air, just relaxed in the nearby airconditioned Vedromall. Jonker Walk has NO airconditioned shopping complex there.

During the festive seasons, special activities can be held to celebrate Happy New Year, Happy Chinese New Year, Ramadhan and Adilfitri, Dumpling and Dragon Boat, Merdeka and Malaysia Day, Mooncadke Festival and Merry Christmas.

It is about time that Kampung Jawa be brought back to prominence,

KAMPUNG JAWA WEBSITE

Another name commonly used to reach our Melaka New Chinatown website is Kampung Jawa website which we start it today.

Melaka New Chinatown area started off in Kampung Jawa which existed since the Melaka Sultanate era in 1400s.

Kampung Jawa was originally inhibited by Javanese residents who carried out fishing as their livelihood. They carried out their occupation in the Melaka river.

During the British period in 1930s when the Malacca municipality wanted to build ther Malacca Central market bere, most inhibitants were relocated to Kampung Morten nearby.

The nearby land was donated by Mr Seet Kee Ann in 1920s to build a road within the area.

After the death of Mr. Seet, this road was named Kee Ann road in honour of his road donation.

The boundary of Melaka New Chinatown or Kampung Jawa is surrounded by Bunga Raya road, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Kampung Jawa, Jalan Kee Ann and Jalan Pasar Baru.

The new Kampung Jawa website is www.kampungjawamelaka.blogspot.com.
